When I was 18 years old I enrolled on a college course for people with learning difficulties, my tutor found a job for me at Tesco, and I’ve been here ever since!

I thought the job would be some sort of work experience, not a permanent position.

Over the years I’ve worked on dairy, grocery and trollies; the only regret is that I wished I requested to do my current role as In-Store Greeter much, much earlier.

"I don’t let my disability hold me back: I’m setting an example so that people with a learning disability can work."

As In-Store Greeter I welcome customers as they enter the store, and if they have any questions about where things are, I show them to the best of my ability. If I am ever unsure about how to answer a question I’ll ask the Customer Service Desk.

It’s hard to say which benefits help me the most, but I use my Colleague Clubcard (which helps me to shop better), I have shares and a pension. A lot of people with learning difficulties find it hard to get a job, but I was fortunate enough to get a position here. The management believed in me, even though when I started I lacked confidence. I feel absolutely brilliant here, and when I go home at the end of the day I can’t wait to begin my next shift.

I’m on the board of trustees of the charity My Life My Choice, it’s user-led by all people in Oxfordshire with learning difficulties, helping to raise their self-esteem by providing training, volunteering employment, social opportunities and assisting people with learning difficulties if they are unfortunate enough to get caught up in the criminal justice system.

“Tesco is part of the family, I can live independently and have my own life through working here.”

Tesco gives me the time off to go to events, and they support my charity work wherever they can. My store also publicised MLMC receiving a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service: I went to Buckingham Palace to receive the award, where there were 7,000 guests, the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and many, many more royals!
