Being deaf and growing up in Norway, career options are poor for the deaf community, so I moved to the UK with my family. It’s much easier to get on here and since starting as a people clerk at the Dagenham Distribution Centre, I haven't looked back.

After becoming gradually more and more interested in HR I managed to move to my current role, where I am responsible for the Protector Line. This is a safe and secure mechanism where colleagues can log concerns and make complaints: we have to respond within 14 days, and it’s a job I find really interesting.

“I look forward to coming to work: the atmosphere is good, it’s like a second home!”

Tesco is one of the best companies I’ve ever worked for. My work-life balance is good: my hours are 9-5 which means I get to spend time with my family and friends. Over Ramadan I did Smarter Working, which allowed me to work 10-6: my colleagues even threw an Eid party for me!

“It’s not easy to find a company as good to work for like Tesco.”

I have an interpreter with me 2-3 days a week as part of the government funding that helps all people with my needs. My team help me get extra hours for the interpreter and have even taken it upon themselves to learn basic sign language. This means that when I don’t have an interpreter, they can sign for me! This has really helped me to fit in and feel included.

Being involved with Tesco’s Disability Network, I offer advice about how to help deaf and hard-of-hearing colleagues, which in turn helps me. People with other disabilities are helped through the network, working alongside LGBT, ethnic minority and ex-military personnel support groups.

The opportunities are really good here: everyone has a continuous development programme, and what Tesco has given to me, I’ve been able to give back.
