Fiona Gittus, Head of Product for Export, shares why she’s championing people with disabilities across our business.

My career at Tesco started 22 years ago, after moving from Waitrose where I worked for nine years. I joined as the Buying Manager for Cake and during my initial five years with the business, I worked various role in both Bakery and Impulse, with my final role being a Senior Buying Manager for Seasonal Confectionery.

I left Tesco in 2002 to join another retailer, and whilst I was there had both of my children – Oliver, who is now 17 and Holly, who is nearly 15. Unfortunately, Holly had a very difficult birth due to clinical negligence and suffered HIE (Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy). As a consequence, Holly now has Athetoid Cerebral Palsy, which means that she is unable to walk, talk or feed herself and requires 24 hour care, albeit she is intelligence intact and still attends a mainstream school.

"I have tried to use my personal situation in the hope to be a positive influence on others, so where I can I share different therapies and learnings that might educate others."

A year after my daughter’s birth, I returned to Tesco as a contractor, working part time. This was originally due to be a six month contract, but in fact lasted for over six years covering a variety of roles such as Buying Manager for Trade Fayre in the Convenience category, an Events Manager for Scottish Events and working in the Superstore Format Team supporting Events and Trade.

In 2013 I officially became re-employed by Tesco again, as the Format Trade Manager for the newly formed London Format. This was probably one of my favourite roles; it was fantastic to be part of a new team who all had the desire and energy to make a difference. The business has changed a lot over the last five years, and consequently have held roles including Trade Manager and Trade Planning Manager for Convenience, Category Selling Manager for Impulse, Senior Partner Manager in Export and for the last year my current role as Head of Product for Export.

Since Holly was born, I have tried to use my personal situation in the hope to be a positive influence on others, so where I can I share different therapies and learnings that might educate others in a similar situation via various social networks. I have also supported my daughter as she has embarked on a modelling career – she was supported by F&F when she appeared online for them in 2015, and her most recent project was a playing a small role in a BBC2 TV Drama called ‘There She Goes’ alongside David Tennant and Jessica Hynes.

My passion for supporting disability has now moved into Tesco as I have joined the Disability at Tesco network. I have a desire to ensure that people with disabilities are supported within our business; admittedly born out of a concern for what will happen to my daughter when she is older, and when she is ready to try and find employment.

My previous experiences in this business have shown me that if a small team of people work together, and share the same passion, there is no end to what can be achieved. I hope that I can leave a legacy in Tesco that will help make a difference to some people that need a little more help and support in life.
